Han sido reconocidos frecuentemente por otros guitarristas y músicos como una influencia. Además, por su estilo, forma de interpretar las guitarras, principalmente, han influido en muchos grupos de rock y de surf.
Uno de los grandes grupos instrumentales de los años 60, precursor en cierto modo del sonido de los Shadows. La base del grupo la formaron en 1959 Don Wilson (10-2-37, Tacoma, Washington) y Bob Bogle (16-1-37, Pórtland, Oregon), ambos guitarristas; completando la banda Nokie Edwards (9-5-35, Lahoma, Oklahoma) al bajo y Howie Jonson a la batería. En 1960 se editaron ellos mismos su primer disco, Walk, don’t run, ante la negativa de varias editoras, y alcanzaron el n.º 2 en las listas americanas.
Otro tema ese mismo año, Perfidia, fue también top-10 a ambos lados del Atlántico, con lo cual los Ventures fueron declarados «mejor grupo instrumental del año». Otros singles clasificados en las listas del Billboard fueron, Ram-buck-shush (61), Lullaby of the leaves (61), Theme from Silver City (61), Blue moon (61), Lolita ya-ya (62), The 2.000 pound bee part 1 (62), Slaughter on 10th Avenue (64), Walk don't run'64 (64), Diamond head (65), Secret agent man (66) y Hawaii Five-0 (69).
En España, sus EP's y singles más destacados fueron: Bésame mucho (62, interpretado a ritmo de twist), Twist con The Ventures (63, continuando con la moda del nuevo ritmo), Telstar/The lonely bull (63), Ventures dance party! (63, que incluía las melodías principales de la película "Cuando llegue septiembre" de Rock Hudson y Gina Lollobrigida), The Ventures "surfing" (63), El cumbanchero (63) y Fugitive (64).

La carrera del cuarteto con cambios constantes de integrantes, tuvo una sorprendente continuidad a pesar de la falta de grandes hits en las listas de ventas, desarrollando en los años siguientes una notable obra, recogida en más de cincuenta álbumes.
Junto a los dos líderes del grupo, hay que destacar posteriores inclusiones, como la del batería Mel Taylor (24-9-33 a 11-8-96), la del guitarra Jerry McGee y la del pianista Johnny Durrill. The Ventures tuvieron su mayor éxito y popularidad en Estados Unidos y Japón durante la década de los 60's. Están en activo y siguen tocando y grabando.
Sus datos de ventas de álbumes (según enciclopedias) sobrepasan los 110 millones de unidades vendidas en todo el mundo. La última formación del grupo según datos del año 2005, la integraban Don Wilson (guitarra rítmica), Nokie Edwards (guitarra, en algunas ocasiones especiales), Jerry McGee (guitarra), Leon Taylor (hijo de Mel Taylor, batería) y Bob Spalding (bajo eléctrico).
